The Web Designer’s Guide to Safe Domain Transfers
Ensure a seamless transition for your clients with our zero-downtime transfer checklist.
1. Prepare the DNS Records First
Before initiating a transfer, ensure you have a full record of the current DNS settings (A, CNAME, MX, and TXT records). Since **Register A Domain** focuses strictly on registration, you must ensure your nameservers are pointed correctly to the hosting provider to prevent any interruption in website or email services.
2. Unlock & Obtain the Auth Code (EPP)
Log into the current registrar and:
- Disable "Registrar Lock" (if applicable).
- Verify the Registrant Contact Email is correct (this is where the transfer approval will be sent).
- Request the EPP code (also known as the Auth code or Domain Password).
3. The .au Transfer Rule
For Australian domains (.com.au, .net.au), transfers are generally faster but require a valid ABN/ACN. Ensure your client's business details are active on the ABR (Australian Business Register) to avoid registry-level rejections.
4. Initiate via Register A Domain
Enter the domain and the EPP code into our transfer tool. We handle the communication with the registry to ensure a secure hand-off.
5. Confirm and Test
Once the transfer is complete (usually 2-7 days for global domains, often faster for .au), verify that the nameservers have remained intact and that the WHOIS data correctly reflects the client as the owner.
